Sonya has 3 years of experience post-graduation counseling a variety of mental and behavioral health issues. She was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland and came to Alaska via the military in 2002. After leaving the military in 2005, Sonya continued her education while working in the Anchorage School District in administrative roles. After obtaining her bachelor’s degree, she worked as a substance abuse counselor/manager in a residential facility. Sonya returned to school for her master’s and since graduating has worked with individuals experiencing severe mental illness, intellectual and developmental disabilities, and substance use in community care programs.

Sonya is a licensed professional counselor who uses a strength-based approach supported by evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing. She is certified to provide Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) for PTSD. Sonya is also certified as a chemical dependency counselor. Sonya uses a variety of theories and techniques in an eclectic approach to find what works for the individual and families/support system being served.

Sonya enjoys being a live-in Grandma, exploring Alaska on her four-wheeler and karaoke nights. She and her retired Air Force husband love to travel but of all the places they have been, thinks that Alaska is one of the most beautiful places with the most down to earth people. This is why she has made it her permanent home.
